LIFE BASED CONCEPTION

The Autobiography of LBC

It all started while working at Eastern Seal from 2004 to 2007 with the I/DD population. As an ex-IBMer, I had never worked in the human services field. Most of my work experience was in computer service and computer networking. To my surprise, this field was a breath of fresh air, transitioning from sterile computers to warm, grateful individuals. Every day spent working with families, individuals, and related staff was full of surprises and unexpected gratitude. I was amazed at how the things I took for granted were seen as invaluable by the people I was assisting. In turn, it made me feel good to make those folks happy. As I learned more about the industry, I had the bright idea that I could become a provider while adding my personal touch.
This is when Life Based Conceptions, LLC was born in 2007, in Durham, NC. I can remember it like yesterday when we signed the lease for a one-room office, with no walls, just a few desks spread out. We felt so proud to be able to serve and make a difference in our community. Now, 20 years later, having served hundreds of people, hired many more employees, and developed community relationships, it seems like a dream. While engaging with others in this industry, it occurred to me that I have been surrounded by special people all my life, starting with my mother, for whom my siblings and I have always been caregivers. Personally, developing some health issues and mobility challenges over the years has made me uniquely qualified for this work.
I’d like to end with my favorite Bible verse that relates to being afflicted: Psalm 119:71, “It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.” For me, this verse reflects how challenges and afflictions can lead to growth and understanding. This is the bedrock on which Life Based Conceptions, LLC is built.
